Hilary Cadman, editor and trainer

Hi, I’m Hilary Cadman, a technical editor and trainer based in rural Australia. I’m enthusiastic about editing tools, and love teaching fellow editors and writers how to use tools in their work.

 

Becoming an editor

I originally trained as a scientist (I have a PhD in biochemistry). I fell into editing after doing a masters in science communication (which included a whole 2 hours on editing!), when a kindly science editor offered me a job in her company. Ten years later, I went freelance, and I have been running Cadman Editing Services since 2009. Most of my work is on reports from large organisations or government departments, usually in the field of health.

Becoming a trainer

My training career began about 15 years ago, when a colleague asked me to run a training course in editing for a government department. Once I moved to a rural area, face-to-face courses became impractical, so I set up Cadman Training Services to deliver online courses. Currently, I offer short, self-paced courses in PerfectIt and EndNote. NAIWE members receive a 25% discount on these courses (see the link in the member benefits section).

Credentials and professional affiliations

My credentials include Advanced professional member of the UK’s CIEP, accredited editor with Australia’s IPEd, editor in the life sciences with BELS and accredited technical editor with WHO. My training courses are promoted by CIEP and IPEd.
